Paul Draper Named One of the Top 5 Winemakers in the World

Decanter Magazine has released the results of their winemaker survey. The survey posed a variety of questions to 133 leading winemakers around the world. One of the questions asked was which producers do you most admire. The results were consolidated into a list of the top thirty winemakers worldwide. The specific order was not revealed other than the identification of the top five, which Paul Draper was included.

“Paul has been a beacon for the importance of single-vineyard sites, sustainable grape growing, selective “natural” winemaking practice and the diversity of wine styles. He is also a great human being”  ~ Peter Gago, Penfolds

“Paul is foremost brilliantly steadfast in his vision and pursuit of excellence. Secondly, he is not conservative, dogmatically traditional or even Francophile. Instead, he was always inquisitive in the extreme, experimental at the risk of embarrassment and inspired by great European classics. To me, Paul’s work with Monte Bello is one of California’s finest examples of success and continuity.”  ~ Tony Soter, Soter Vineyards

The four other members of the top five were consultant Alberto Antonini, Christophe Roumier of Burgundy’s Domaines Georges Roumier, international consultant Michel Rolland, and Aubert de Villaine, co-director of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.

Several other interesting questions were asked including topics relating to the impact of climate change, style preferences, alcohol levels, and regional preference. Some of those results can be found here.

The entire survey was published in Decanter magazine’s July issue which is available now.

  6. Congratulations, Paul! This honor comes as no surprise, of course. Not only am I a proud, long-time member of Ridge’s ATP program, but my granddaughter Amanda is a good friend of your daughter (Caitlin?). My partners and I are home winemakers, and we strive to make our wines in the Ridge tradition. In fact, we will be using a Dry Creek mostly-zinfandel field blend for our 2015 vintage. We salute you all at Ridge, and we love your wines. Thank you.

  7. Well deserved! Draper was also named among the “20 Most Admired Winemakers in North America” by industry peers in the Nov. 2014 issue of Vineyard & Winery Management.
