Strategic Partnerships, Shoes, and Wine

July 22, 2011

You’re probably familiar with the term “Strategic Partnerships.” It’s a pretty common part of today’s business vernacular. But there are certainly variations as regards the breadth of definition. For example, in our business, a narrow definition of a strategic partnership would be for us, as a producer of wines, to reach out to someone who is a seller of wines. Certainly strategic, but not particularly imaginative.

I like to think that, here are Ridge, we have a pretty expansive definition of what constitutes a strategic partner, due in no small part to that fact that, while we are indeed a business that “sells” something (i.e. wine), what we “sell” is as much philosophy and worldview, as it is product. And truly, I think we share it, as opposed to sell it.

The point being that when we think of strategic partnerships, we tend to think of people/groups/organizations/businesses with which we share a philosophy and worldview, as opposed to people/groups/organizations/businesses  that are simply in the same business as us.

One of the things I love most about Ridge Vineyards is that we seem forever to be engaged in a perennial dance of reconciliation, forever enacting an integrative duality, always striving to bridge the cerebral and the physical, the artistic and the scientific, the tangible and the ephemeral, the high brow and the low brow, the lovely and the funky, the studied and the instinctual. Ridge Vineyards is a Yin Yang composed of one-half mercurially austere seriousness and one-half playfully even-handed populism. Ridge is deadly serious about making something that is really, really fun to enjoy.

This is what we look for in our “strategic partnerships,” shared sensibilities in all the regards noted above.

Enter, oddly enough, shoes. You may have seen a previous post on this blog in which I waxed long and luxuriously on the footwear of wine. (If not, you can check it out here.) The point being, that through a very interesting and enjoyable set of circumstances, I have come to know one of our Monte Bello Collector  members as more than just a customer. I am happy to now count him not only as a friend, but also as a partner. He works for a shoe company, but believe you me, this ain’t sellin’ shoes like what Al Bundy did …

He works on the “Lifestyle” side of his business, which means that he spends a lot of time looking for a lot of strategic partnerships; partnerships of the very same sort of variety and character that we so very much enjoy.

And thus it was that I found myself in San Francisco recently, at the very fabulous Union Made store; an establishment with one of the better Mission Statements around:

In November of 2009 we opened a little shop where a liquor store used to be on a quiet little street between the Mission and Castro neighborhoods in San Francisco. The idea was to bring only the finest quality men’s goods to one intimate space, sell it a fair price and to deal with people who appreciate such merchandise and customer service. So we found a space and started making a list of our favorite brands. Brands that manufacture clothing that is durable, well designed and timeless. Jeans that a customer could wear for years and would sooner repair than replace; sweatshirts that get softer and more perfect after each laundry cycle; a shoe that will be just as relevant and better looking in 20 years then it is today. As word of our shop spread, we started getting requests from people all over the world for our hand picked clothing and dry goods. As our shop has evolved, so has our mission – to offer people everywhere the same quality service and products our customers in our little store on Sanchez Street. We are going back to our roots while knowing that the time we live in is now.

I was there representing Ridge Vineyards at the request of New Balance, who were launching a new line of artisan shoes made strictly in the USA.

Union Made, New Balance Made In The USA, and Ridge Vineyards. Now that’s a strategic partnership!

And how about this, shoes sold in a wine box! There’s another great bit of partnershipping:

Needless to say, it was quite an affair. I brought with me the following wines to taste guests on:

2009 Ridge Vineyards Estate Chardonnay (loads of lemon, honey, and pear, with a very fresh, but solidly built feel …)

2009 Ridge Vineyards Geyserville (the essence of elegance; spice, acidity, herbality, all wrapped up in a bow of high-tone red fruit …)

2005 Ridge Vineyards Lytton Estate Grenache (the most structured of the bunch, with amazing percolations of bright red fruit and spice inside a bodice of firm and mineral-y tannin …)

2008 Ridge Vineyards Estate Cabernet (complex, integrated, structured, a tremendous amount of information for the palate …)

And here are a few snaps from the event (I’ve also provided a link at the bottom of the page to Union Made’s blog, which has some lovely pics from the event as well!)

And here is Union Made’s wrap up: The Union Made Blog: Event Recap!

99 Point Rating!

July 12, 2011

Have you heard about the latest issue of Wine Advocate, Robert Parker’s legendary publication? The one profiling California reds? Issue 195? There is a Ridge Vineyards wine reviewed in this issue, and boy oh boy does it get a fine treatment!

Here is how the Wine Advocate defines a wine that receives a rating of 96-100 points:

An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase, and consume.

Which makes a 99-point rating seem pretty spectacular, I’d say! Which means that the Ridge Vineyards 2001 Monte Bello has just received, well, a pretty spectacular rating!

The review opens this way:

“A resoundingly great effort from this iconic producer.”

And concludes with these words:

“…make no mistake about this Monte Bello — it is a great wine.”

Not so very bad, as my Grandpa used to say. Not so very bad indeed.

Double Monte Bello Vertical Opportunity!

May 19, 2011

If you’re not yet a Monte Bello Collector member, now might REALLY be a good time to just take that plunge.

Why?

It’s the Final Assemblage Tasting this weekend, and if you sign up NOW, you can still attend!

What exactly does that mean? Well, I could wax ad infinitum about the 2010 Monte Bello (what a vintage!), and I could certainly sing endless praises for Fatted Calf Charcuterie, Gayle’s Bakery, and Cowgirl Creamery (all of whom will be offering their wares at the event!), but even more than all that, we are SERIOUSLY laying it on from the wine side, in terms of the additional treats on offer. Doubt me? Dig THIS!

A DOUBLE MONTE BELLO VERTICAL OPPORTUNITY!

First, 2005 and 1995 Monte Bello, side by side!

–then–

1977 and 2007 Monte Bello, side by side!

Yes, that’s right. That’s not a typo, that is 1977. NINETEEN SEVENTY-SEVEN!

Do you realize that’s the same year that both Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” and The Sex Pistol’s “Never Mind The Bollocks” came out? I mean, c’mon!

Doubt me? Dig THIS!

Just tasted the 1977 about an hour ago …

Remarkable (and admittedly unexpected!) cohesion of color; some evolution, certainly; meaning, some bricking and cranberry, but still a lovely mid-tone plum belly …

Loads of dried fruit on the nose, plus a bevy of black herb shades; hints of tanned leather and anise, some menthol & dry mineral; even some Japanese pickled plum …

Still dense and concentrated on the palate, yet with a pillowy effluence … Tannins are fully and excellently resolved, with some subtle traces of acidity still bouncing; these both emerge a bit stronger in the finish …

Primary fruit is of course largely diminished, as appropriate for a wine of this maturation level, but there is such a lovely delicacy afoot, with multiple layers of secondary and tertiary herb and spice and dried fruit notes, that this just HAS to be tasted NOW! (For the arch archivists amongst you, you can see my notes from a previous tasting of this extraordinary vintage here).

Meaning, much Dig, Dig, and Digging to be done. And Dig THIS; 1977 Monte Bello, The Mini-Movie …

Membership Months: Edition II, July!

July 3, 2010

Membership Months at Ridge Vineyards!

Ridge Vineyards was very excited to debut a new Member Benefit back in February of 2010, something we called Membership Months. It was the first time we rolled it out, and I think it’s safe to say all concerned were quite pleased with the results; meaning, we had great wine, you came to taste it, we poured it, you loved it, you left with it, we were happy, you were happy, success!

So now, after a very excellent February edition, we’re ready for round two! Here’s the story:

All during the months of February and July, we invite you, the members of our ATP, Monte Bello Collector, and Z List wine programs, to bring your friends and family to our tasting rooms, where each and every one of your guests will enjoy member pricing on all tasting fees!

Ok, that’s the scoop, so, if you’re a member of one of our wine programs, round up your family and friends, and bring ‘em out to see us! And if you’re not a member? Well, two options: join, or make friends with a member!

In all seriousness, please join us for these very special opportunities to extend your special member benefits to those that are special to you.

Cheers!

Monte Bello Assemblage Tasting In Pictures – 4.17.10

April 19, 2010

It was a beautiful Saturday, and nearly 500 people came up the mountain to enjoy the view, the weather, and the wine! It was our second Monte Bello Assemblage tasting (out of three total for the year), and we had Paul Draper, David Gates, Shun Ishikubo, and the whole Monte Bello Tasting Room Staff on hand to host as we poured 2006 Monte Bello Chardonnay, our Monte Bello Half-Bottle Showcase vertical featuring 375ml bottles of 1990, 1992, and 1994 Monte Bello, and the current assemblage of the 2009 Monte Bello. But why listen to me, when you can see for yourself! Enjoy the slideshow! And remember, there is still one more Monte Bello Collector Event, the weekend of 5.22.10-5.23.10 …

Monte Bello Half-Bottle Showcase & Monte Bello Assemblage Tasting! Saturday!

April 16, 2010

This Saturday we are very pleased to be hosting a wonderful event, our Monte Bello Assemblage Tasting, during which we’ll be pouring not only the current assemblage of the 2009 Monte Bello (slated for release in 2012) and the 2006 Monte Bello Chardonnay (recently awarded 95 points by Wine Spectator!), but also an extraordinary trio of back-vintage Monte Bellos as part of our ongoing Monte Bello Half-Bottle Showcase Series (you can read about the previous edition here).

This time around, we’ll be pouring the 1990, 1992, and 1994 Monte Bellos from 375 ml bottles, offering an unparalleled point-of-entry into the mysteries and majesties of ageable wines and their bottle-format-specific maturation rates. (My current tasting notes are below.)

On hand to host this fine event, in addition to our lovely Tasting Room Staffers, will be members of our Production Team, including Paul Draper himself, alongside our celebrated Vice President of Vineyard Operations David Gates, and Shun Ishikubo, our Assistant Production Manager.

As to event specs, here’s the gist: the event is $30/person for the general public, $15/person for members of our ATP and ZList programs, and complimentary to Monte Bello Collector members(+1 guest per membership). For our non-member guests, the event fee will be refunded to those who join the Monte Bello Collector futures program the day of the event, and for our ATP and Zlist members, the $15 event fee will be applied to any Monte Bello purchased in the Tasting Room. (For more details about this event, please click here.)

And now, on to some tasting notes!

1990 Monte Bello (375 ml)

Deep crimson in the glass, with a vivid cranberry-salmon limn, showing medium-light viscosity in the legs – rustic aromatics, rich with plum succulence and forest-floor herbality and earth — incredibly supple point-of-entry, with astonishingly youthful acidity and utterly seamless tannins — hints of raspberry and  plum mid-palate, with some cassis and tobacco interwoven throughout the palate spread –a lingering woodsiness redolent of sweet pipe tobacco wraps around the core  of meaty stew, concentrated broth, and dried fruits that makes up the elegantly weighted finish, as the mineral-driven chalkiness of the integrated tannins lays languidly across the tongue — remarkably intact for a 20-year half-bottle, and absolutely ready to drink, with no signs of degradation, only the fine emergence of secondary and tertiary maturation characteristics.

1992 Monte Bello (375 ml)

Gorgeous cherry hues sparkle in the bowl; deep, almost black cherry in the belly, widening out to a bright red cherry limn; notably adhesive viscosity in the legs — deep, dark aromatics, rich with cocoa, chocolate liquor, graphite, and black and blue berries — big, round, warm, and supple at point-of-entry, showing itself as a plush and fleshy Monte Bello right away — tannins are finely ground and well-integrated, though they definitely dominate the acidity, which takes a comparatively restrained role in the construct — Sweet and decadent fruit notes are tremendously expressive mid-palate, though without being cloying or overtly grandiose; raspberry and blackberry characteristics dominate, in that way of exhibiting both sweet fruit and woodsy seed notes — the finish is singularly mouth-coating, and the teeth-to-inner-lip tannins established at point-of-entry are still swelling in intensity at this point — the finish is long and warm, and exceedingly decadent. While certainly drinkable now, and despite the reserved intensity of the acidity, the sheer opulence of the fruit suggests this is still developing and maturing.

1994 Monte Bello (375 ml)

Black to red plum hues display brilliantly in the bowl, moving from dark to light from belly to limn, with quick-moving legs bespeaking an elegant body-weight on the palate — wildly exotic aromatics that, while almost bordering on funky, at the same time exhibit utterly archetypal old-world cab characteristics; anise, currant, tobacco, campfire wood and smoke, mint, coffee, fleshy black olives, and a multiplicity of black fruits, in particular — pointed without being austere, structured without being clumsy, the beams-and-girders are front-and-center at point-of-entry, while a horde of cocoa-powder-dusted and dark-chocolate-covered fruits await their turn mid-palate — acid and tannin are perfectly balanced throughout, and the finish, while shorter than some vintages, is seamlessly palate-coating and completely devoid of both inappropriately angular distractions and short-changing hollownesses — in short, rich, complex, fully saturated, and if anything, still young, though very, very drinkable now as well.

The Monte Bello Collector Component Tasting In Pictures!

March 8, 2010

Well, I have to say, it was just a tremendous weekend up here at Monte Bello. We hosted members of our Monte Bello Collector Program for the 2009 Component Tasting, and this is absolutely one of my favorite events of the year. It’s such a rare and educational opportunity to experience the Monte Bello in this fashion; tasting all the components separately, prior to the beginning of assemblage. Not only is it a unique insight into the mystical mojo mad scientist magic of the winemaker’s art, but it’s a great opportunity to begin to learn the wine that will eventually be yours; a deep enhancement to the experiential hoodoo of drinking wine.

But enough of words, let’s experience the visuals; if you were here, this should be a nice opportunity to relive the joys of the weekend, and if you weren’t able to be with us, then hopefully these snapshots will act an inducement of a kind to encourage a future visit. Please join us! It’s magical …

Did you see yourself in there? I certainly hope so. And by the way, a special thank you to the members of our Production Team who participated in the event. I think the opportunity to speak with them is one of the truly excellent perks of the whole experience. In the pictures above, you can see the following members of said team:

Paul Draper

Eric Baugher – Vice President, Winemaking

David Gates – Vice President, Vineyard Operations

Shun Ishikubo – Assistant Production Manager

Caleb Mosley – Viticulturist

Karen Schmidt – Director of Quality Control / Chemist

And this post wouldn’t be complete without a HUGE hearty thank you to the Monte Bello Tasting Room Staff (& participating members of the Ridge Retail Staff!), who time and time again raise the bar with their formidable displays of knowledge, hospitality, and plain old hard work. Cheers to (in no particular order) Sam Howles-Banerji, Amy Monroe, Michael Riese, Sonja Seaberg, Karen Cai, Cecilia Aguilar, Chris Seguin, Zani Nesvacil, Karen Cai, Peter Yaninek, Samantha McMillan, Barry Campbell, Darren Gardner, Tara Einis, Howard Hickok, Jay Jensky, and Jane Occhialini!

Ridge A to Z! This Weekend at Monte Bello!

January 22, 2010

Greetings all!

So, full disclosure, this post is essentially directed at those of you who will be in the vicinity of our Monte Bello Tasting Room this Saturday. Why? Because we’re havin’ a rippin’ good event on the 23rd, right here on the mountain!

Now, that said, some of what will transpire, at least from a content standpoint, is certainly good information for all, but for the purposes of this post, I’ll be speaking specifically about the on-site activities.

What we’ll be doing is debuting a brand-new event, Ridge A to Z! This is essentially a showcase event for our Wine Programs (ATP to Zlist, with the good ol’ Monte Bello Collector in between!); an event for which we’ll be pouring spectacular examples of the wines available through the various memberships. And to support it all culinarily, the marvelous folks from Fatted Calf Charcuterie will be on hand to provide on-site sliced organic salumi! Dig!

Here’s the official storyline, which can also be found on our Events Page:

Discover Ridge Membership and Enjoy Salumi from Fatted Calf
Monte Bello Tasting Room (Cupertino)
January 23, 11 – 4

Please join Ridge Vineyards at our A to Z Membership Event!  Wondering about the ATP program? Ever weighed the benefits of Z list membership? Curious about buying “futures” in the  Monte Bello Collector Program? Let us take the confusion out of the equation by hosting you for a delicious, educational, and program-focused tasting. Sip, swirl, and taste the offerings at each wine program station, and in between tastes, you can take a moment to chat with the staff from Fatted Calf Charcuterie*, who will be on-hand serving up samples of their organic salumi from their onsite slicer! As you visit each membership station you will discover what each program has on offer, and in the process become acquainted with both our single-vineyard wines, and our knowledgeable staff.

In addition, we will be making available an exclusive short-list pricelist of limited-production and end-of-vintage wines that only members have access to!

This event is complimentary to members of our wine programs, and $10 for the general public. The event price includes a Ridge logo glass.

*The Fatted Calf is an artisanal charcuterie producing a wide range of hand crafted products using high quality, natural ingredients. They use the best available products; organic and hormone free meats, superior seasonings and salts, organic herbs and produce.

Just in case you’re having trouble visualizing what Fatted Calf staffers engaging in on-site slicing might look like, here’s a little assistance; a shot from our Lytton Springs facility, where the Fatted Calfers were very recently doing their thing:

Well, I think that about says it all! But for the ever-more curious amongst ye, you can also check out the event tasting menu by clicking here, and you can find out what wines we’ll be pouring.

Hope to see you on Saturday!
