Virtual Winemaker Tasting of Spring Releases

Friday, April 12, 2013 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM (PST)

~

It will be like Princess Leia’s hologram and FDR’s Fireside Chats all rolled into one.

You, Paul, the night, and the music.

Engage.

The tasting. The chat. The magic.

He sips. He sip. You make a comment. He chuckles appreciatively, compliments you on your palate.

He sips, smiles. You smile too. This is amazing.

Wine after wine. The banter, the insights, the stories.

You remember France. So does Paul.

You like lamb. Paul does too.

This is amazing.

You note a hint of cedar. Paul notes eucalyptus.

You, a pleased half-laugh. Paul, a knowing grin.

This is amazing.

Then, finally, the last sip of Cabernet.

It’s over. The lights dim.

Paul says, “Beam me up, Christopher.”

And then he’s gone.

Like The Cat and the Hat and his proverbial moss-covered three-handled family gradunza, he is gone.

But with you

remains a memory

that will last

forever.

The Monte Bello Collector Component Tasting In Pictures, Praise, and Prose …

March 22, 2013

We don’t do a great many events in any given year up here on our mountain, so when we do stage them, we try to thoroughly imbue them with all the passion and gravitas our four-sizes-that-day wine-hearts can muster.

Our annual trio of Monte Bello Collector events are as special to us as anything we do, and of the three, the Component Tasting is quite possibly the most magical of all.

It is as unique a wine happening as I can imagine, and I believe it affords our Monte Bello Collector members one of the rather more singularly experiential ways by which to get to know the wine that will one day be theirs.

The Monte Bello is essentially what is oft-referred to as a Bordeaux blend; meaning, it is composed of an assemblage of varietals traditionally associated with the famed Bordeaux region in France; in our case, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

As tasters and collectors of our Monte Bello know, the percentages in the assemblage vary year to year, depending primarily on the mercurial contributions of a nuanced and complex panoply of sub-microclimatic blocks within the larger vineyard borders of our mountain estate.

What the Component Tasting afford collectors the opportunity to do is experience barrel samples of the individual components prior to The Final Assemblage, and on top of that, to taste The First Assemblage; meaning, essentially, to preview the results of our first go-around with building what will eventually become The Final Assemblage – i.e. the Monte Bello.

[For a full explanation of how the assemblage process works and plays out, please click here.]

The Monte Bello Collector program is quite literally a “futures” program, but for our members, the future begins now.

Or should I say, it began on March 9th …

It was a beautiful morning, alive with the light of Mother Nature’s wide smile warming our Earth-Ball’s still-sleeping belly …

I wish to conclude this post with beautiful words of praise from two of our wonderful members …

There is no doubt the wines poured were excellent, showing great character and promising a long life. We can all agree that the weather was stunning and made Sunday one of the most beautiful days we have spent at Ridge in years. But it is the Ridge Monte Bello tasting room team that put the life into the affair. This team worked all day to host the hundreds of us that came to enjoy.  And with praise equal to the wine and the weather, Rene and I extend our sincere thanks to the whole team for making Sunday one of the finest days in our Ridge memories. They are what makes days like this wonderful. — Les and Rene

To Les & Rene, to the team you so kindly speak of, and to everyone who made this event so special, I wish to offer the deepest of bows.

Thank you.

March Madness

February 28, 2013

My boss is … shall we say … aware of college athletics. So March Madness means something to him.

MM13

He is not, on the other hand, a male European Hare. March Madness means something entirely different to a male European Hare.

MM_Hare

And then there is working at Ridge, where March Madness means something altogether again.

Friday Foodie Friday! -or- The First Friday To End ALL First Fridays (or, at least the 2012 ones!)

November 26, 2012

To deploy a rather retro-minded rendition of contemporary parlance, the December First Friday at Monte Bello is going to be … the bomb.

Not to be confused with You Dropped A Bomb On Me, by the Gap Band.

A song which, while referencing The Bomb, is in fact, The Jammy.

Anyhow, back to the December First Friday, which is going to be, as I said, The Bomb.

Why?

It’s  going to be so, because we’ll be pulling out some serious culinary stops, and anytime the Ridge foodie-stone gets called upon for a whetting, you know it’s going to be something special. Something explosive. Something positively bomb-esque. In fact, The Bomb.

So, if you’re a member, and you can get yourself to Monte Bello on the First Friday of December, then very much start staying tuned into this blog, because we’re very much starting to roll out details.

But first, a bit of a back-up, a refresher, and a tutorial.

First off, what is First Friday?

First Friday is a very special monthly member event held here at our Monte Bello Estate. As advertised, it occurs on the First Friday of every month; 4-7pm, without fail. Like clockwork. First Friday. And what do we DO at First Friday? Well, lots of things. Always wine-centric. It’s actually a very fun, and often experimental, lil’ wine event. Do a search for “First Friday” on this blog, and you’ll dig up all sorts of unique themes and wines and adventures and experiments and shenanigans and educative explorations into the wild wine winds. In fact, we often use First Friday as an opportunity to showcase a new member release, though that said, we just as often might use it to showcase some newly-uncovered rarity from the library vaults. And actually, sometimes we do both! First Friday is also a great opportunity for our Will-Call members to pick up their shipments, and there is also usually a nosh afoot; bread, cheese, olive oil, tapenade, those sorts of things. Sometimes I even cook. I did so pretty darn often this year, actually, though I failed to keep up with my New Year’s pledge of cooking for EVERY First Friday.

But I will more than make up for THAT, with the December edition, because I’m bringing in BIG GUNS to cook for our guests!

But more on that later. Back to the back up, the refresher, and the tutorial.

I think we’ve covered the basics of what First Friday is, but, as it’s imperative we understand this happening as a MEMBER event, it might behoove us to contemplate membership for a moment. What does membership at Ridge look like?

Well, it looks great, actually. It looks like you becoming part of a delightful and historic lineage of wine-lovers that stretches back 35 years! That’s right, the Advanced Tasting Program (ATP) — Club Tine #1 of Ridge’s Oeno-Trident — was whelped 35 years ago this year, and is still going quite strong, now linked at the staff with Tines 2 & 3 — Zlist & Collector — in said triumvirate. The Oeno-Trident: ATP, Monte Bello Collector, and Zlist.

That’s what membership at Ridge looks like.

And it also looks like you being invited to extraordinary events, both exclusive and public. And it looks like you being offered exclusive access to rare limited-releases and hard-to-find library wines. And it looks like you visiting us often to enjoy complimentary wine tastings, and very special member pricing on enhanced tasting experiences. And it looks like you benefitting from member-only purchase discounts. And it looks like you building multiple verticals of outstanding flagship offerings. And it looks like you eating well, drinking well, and enjoying great fellowship. And it looks like you getting to know us, and us getting to know you. It looks like me taking pictures of you and your children on our Monte Bello knoll (yep, did that with some members yesterday!), and it looks like you naming your first-born after me (ok, maybe not that part). Mainly, it looks like us very happily welcoming you into the arms of California’s Original Wine Club, and you being very happy about that.

ATP 35 logo

So that’s First Friday, and that’s being a Member.

So what about this December First Friday?

Well, there is a confluence afoot. First off, it’s First Friday. So, of course we’ll be doing something special. Next, it’s the December First Friday, making it a) the last First Friday of 2012, and b) dead-center of the holiday season. Which all adds up to, game on. Or should I say, The Bomb.

So, in the interest of double-needling up the yarn of said confluence, we’re throwing a fantastical food-and-wine dang doodle. That’s right! We’re going to Pitch a Food & Wine Dang Doodle (to rather preposterously borrow a lyric from the great Howlin’ Wolf):

Tell Automatic Slim , tell Razor Totin’ Jim
Tell Butcher Knife Totin’ Annie, tell Fast Talking Fanny
A we gonna pitch a ball, a down to that union hall
We gonna romp and tromp till midnight
We gonna fuss and fight till daylight
We gonna pitch a wang dang doodle all night long

So, let’s review:

December First Friday
Big Gun Cooks
Wine Club Membership
Food & Wine Dang Doodle

Yep, that about covers it.

Monte Bello Collector Component Tasting Event: The 4488 Wrap!

March 12, 2012

Monte Bello Noir?

It was a dark and stormy night.

Except it wasn’t.

What it actually was, was a warm and sunny morning, with the low sun casting rays through the gauze of morning haze that lightly veiled the vineyards as I walked down towards the Old Torre Family Barn …

We couldn’t have asked for a better day, and the wine gods were smiling.

At that moment, with the mountain sounds closed to all but the gossip of birds and the rustle of the breezes betwixt the gentle crop-cover tendrils, it was hard to believe how many people would soon be joining us for the Monte Bello Collector Component Tasting…

But the lure of a tasting this unique is strong. Taste, grasshopper, the wine is good …

Or should I say, grasshoppers …

In addition to the beauty of the location, the deliciousness of the culinary offerings, and the singular caliber and exclusivity of the wines, one of the greatest appeals of this event is the opportunity to engage with members of our production team. Winemaker Eric Baugher, seen here with Kim Korupp (most excellent Monte Bello Retail Sales & Hospitality staffer), is a legendarily generous host …

…to whom guests come in droves, notebooks and pens in hand.

We were particularly pleased this year to have a new member of the production team join us for the Component Event festivities. He is Kyle Theriot, and he is now our Monte Bello viticulturist, and this was his very first Collector event as a host!

In addition to the excitement generated around the opportunity to taste barrel samples of the Monte Bello components prior to final assemblage …

… The event is also a great way to enjoy some of the finest of Northern California’s culinary offerings. Each year, we choose three of our fave producers, and we feature their wares at all three Monte Bello Collector Events. This year, Gayle’s Bakery in Capitola provided our breads, Cowgirl Creamery provided our cheeses, and Daniel Cote and the team at The Chef’s Chateau provided the charcuterie …

For the carnivores amongst ye, ye might wish to note that the salami was actually made with Monte Bello, and the pâté is topped with dried cherries re-hydrated with Geyserville Essence. I’m just sayin …

Anyhow, as the day progressed, it only became ever more incomparably beautiful …

There is nothing quite like the sparkle of Monte Bello sun on a Riedel wine glass …

It even brings a smile to the faces of our hard-working staff. For example, even though most excellent host Jenny Merit will likely be suffering wine-pourer’s elbow by the end of the day, her spirit remains simply irrepressible …

Something about the wines, perhaps …

The barn that is the locational epicenter of the event was built at the turn of the century by the Torre family; it was their winery, and the first 8 vintages of Ridge were made there as well. It’s a great space to begin with, and tasting within those hallowed walls definitely goes a long way towards helping one deeply internalize the historical narrative of our wines, and the story of our lands …

In a temporary lull, you’ll see it come across the faces of our staff; the depth of it all, the weight, the history, the story. Peter Yaninek is just as krinkly-eyed and kindly a host as one could ever hope for (and deeply knowledgeable and passionate as well!), and as euphorically reverential a viticultural mendicant as anyone who’s ever strode the mountain or lifted a bottle of Ridge, but in the temporary quiet of a non-pouring moment, the gravitas returns …

While the tenets of Responsible Hospitality mandate a mitigated, modulated, and controlled dispensation of tastes, with nothing left to chance as regards the precision of the pours …

… nothing can in fact diminish the enthusiasm with which those tastes are enjoyed. Take winemaker Eric Baugher, for example; he’s not just an employee, he’s a fan!

And he’s not the only one …

(if you look closely in the pic above, you can spot the host of the very great Stay Rad Wine Blog!)

(And above is Assistant Winemaker Shun Ishikubo, talkin’ shop with none other than The Pepper Man!)

Why, even Mark Vernon, the President of Ridge Vineyards, got in on the act! He’s not just the President, he’s a fan!

While the Old Torre Winery Barn was certainly the locational epicenter of the event (courtesy of our pouring not only the four components, but also the 2011 Monte Bello First Assemblage AND the soon-to-be-released 2009 Monte Bello!), the Monte Bello Tasting Room was certainly a hot bed of oeno-activity as well …

After all, legendary Monte Bello staffer Barry Campbell was pouring the 2006 Monte Bello down there, not to mention the VERY RARE 2009 Historic Vineyard Series Klein Cabernet … they’s was linin’ up, they was!

And don’t forget the picnic area! Heaven forfend if you forget the picnic area. That’s where the serious collectors go, the salty and sage veterans of the Monte Bello wars …

The picnic area is where THEY go to share the treasurable niceties from their own hidden vaults … Oat Valley Carignane, anyone?

One of the true stars of the whole show, of course, is our head winemaker, Paul Draper, who, despite having been in these viticultural trenches for over 40 years, still delights in chatting with guests about all things wine, and all things Ridge …

And when he and Eric both go side-by-side?

Magic. That’s a lot of palate magic right there …

And don’t get me started about David Gates! Being our Vineyard Manager (i.e. a farmer!) it’s a tad rarer that we get him INSIDE the barn, but anyone who’s ever tasted with David knows he’s just astonishingly charming, brilliant, knowledgeable, charismatic, and flat-out entertaining. Here he is, running it down for very well-regarded wine-blogger Martin Redmond (he of http://enofylzwineblog.com/) …

The sun is shining, the weather is sweet, yeah, makes you want to move those dancing feet

Or, just sit, and not do much of anything. Just drink wine, feel happy, relax …

And if all I’ve said to date hasn’t sold ya, just dig this cat (and note the vintage Day In the Vineyard shirt!) …

Dig it Les! Just dig it …

And to you all, I thank you all! Thank you all, on behalf of us all! This is such a special event for us, and we treasure the time we spend with you. Come back next time, it’s going to be oh so fun again …

Strategic Partnerships, Shoes, and Wine

July 22, 2011

You’re probably familiar with the term “Strategic Partnerships.” It’s a pretty common part of today’s business vernacular. But there are certainly variations as regards the breadth of definition. For example, in our business, a narrow definition of a strategic partnership would be for us, as a producer of wines, to reach out to someone who is a seller of wines. Certainly strategic, but not particularly imaginative.

I like to think that, here are Ridge, we have a pretty expansive definition of what constitutes a strategic partner, due in no small part to that fact that, while we are indeed a business that “sells” something (i.e. wine), what we “sell” is as much philosophy and worldview, as it is product. And truly, I think we share it, as opposed to sell it.

The point being that when we think of strategic partnerships, we tend to think of people/groups/organizations/businesses with which we share a philosophy and worldview, as opposed to people/groups/organizations/businesses  that are simply in the same business as us.

One of the things I love most about Ridge Vineyards is that we seem forever to be engaged in a perennial dance of reconciliation, forever enacting an integrative duality, always striving to bridge the cerebral and the physical, the artistic and the scientific, the tangible and the ephemeral, the high brow and the low brow, the lovely and the funky, the studied and the instinctual. Ridge Vineyards is a Yin Yang composed of one-half mercurially austere seriousness and one-half playfully even-handed populism. Ridge is deadly serious about making something that is really, really fun to enjoy.

This is what we look for in our “strategic partnerships,” shared sensibilities in all the regards noted above.

Enter, oddly enough, shoes. You may have seen a previous post on this blog in which I waxed long and luxuriously on the footwear of wine. (If not, you can check it out here.) The point being, that through a very interesting and enjoyable set of circumstances, I have come to know one of our Monte Bello Collector  members as more than just a customer. I am happy to now count him not only as a friend, but also as a partner. He works for a shoe company, but believe you me, this ain’t sellin’ shoes like what Al Bundy did …

He works on the “Lifestyle” side of his business, which means that he spends a lot of time looking for a lot of strategic partnerships; partnerships of the very same sort of variety and character that we so very much enjoy.

And thus it was that I found myself in San Francisco recently, at the very fabulous Union Made store; an establishment with one of the better Mission Statements around:

In November of 2009 we opened a little shop where a liquor store used to be on a quiet little street between the Mission and Castro neighborhoods in San Francisco. The idea was to bring only the finest quality men’s goods to one intimate space, sell it a fair price and to deal with people who appreciate such merchandise and customer service. So we found a space and started making a list of our favorite brands. Brands that manufacture clothing that is durable, well designed and timeless. Jeans that a customer could wear for years and would sooner repair than replace; sweatshirts that get softer and more perfect after each laundry cycle; a shoe that will be just as relevant and better looking in 20 years then it is today. As word of our shop spread, we started getting requests from people all over the world for our hand picked clothing and dry goods. As our shop has evolved, so has our mission – to offer people everywhere the same quality service and products our customers in our little store on Sanchez Street. We are going back to our roots while knowing that the time we live in is now.

I was there representing Ridge Vineyards at the request of New Balance, who were launching a new line of artisan shoes made strictly in the USA.

Union Made, New Balance Made In The USA, and Ridge Vineyards. Now that’s a strategic partnership!

And how about this, shoes sold in a wine box! There’s another great bit of partnershipping:

Needless to say, it was quite an affair. I brought with me the following wines to taste guests on:

2009 Ridge Vineyards Estate Chardonnay (loads of lemon, honey, and pear, with a very fresh, but solidly built feel …)

2009 Ridge Vineyards Geyserville (the essence of elegance; spice, acidity, herbality, all wrapped up in a bow of high-tone red fruit …)

2005 Ridge Vineyards Lytton Estate Grenache (the most structured of the bunch, with amazing percolations of bright red fruit and spice inside a bodice of firm and mineral-y tannin …)

2008 Ridge Vineyards Estate Cabernet (complex, integrated, structured, a tremendous amount of information for the palate …)

And here are a few snaps from the event (I’ve also provided a link at the bottom of the page to Union Made’s blog, which has some lovely pics from the event as well!)

And here is Union Made’s wrap up: The Union Made Blog: Event Recap!
