Is The End/Is Not The End
ITEINTE_I

Wind slips through the vine rows

as a dervish, tendrils plaited

as a mythic mountain fable

spools around a dream awaited

.

And the wingspan of the hawk’s shadow

moves, and moves again

Oh, the harvest may be over

but the labor never ends

.

Dew-licked crickets lick up

all the dew upon the weeds

that have curled around the wheel ruts

stringing grapeskins up like beads

.

And the black crows on the vine poles

caw, then caw again

Oh, the harvest may be over

but the labor never ends

.

This way, says the owl’s neck

no, this way – arms akimbo—

say the birdhouse sentry tent-poles

leaning any way the wind blows

.

And the sun’s limning yolk

fades a shade, then fades again

Oh, the harvest may be over

but the labor never ends.
