This Is An Exhortation

This is a gratitude post, and a humility post, and an appreciation post.

But most of all, this is an exhortation post.

VOTE

I want you to vote.

I want you to vote in the Wine Blog Awards.

And of course I want you to vote for Ridge, and for “4488: A Ridge Blog.”

But more than that, I want you to vote for something that goes beyond wine blogs.

I want you to vote for writing, and for writers.

I want you to vote for the importance of stories.

I want you to vote for storytellers.

If I could ask anything of you, the voters, I would ask you to do this:

Vote for those writers who make you feel, who tell you a story, who recall for you a person, who draw for you a memory.

Vote for those writers who understand and transmit the experiential, the narrative, the parable, the proverb.

Vote for those writers who enact ritual, who translate ritual, who uphold ritual.

Vote for those writers who weave in music, and painting, and poetry, and theater, and dance.

Vote for those writers who draw on their families, their friends, their loved ones.

Vote for those writers who mention love, and death, and fear, and bravery, and sickness, and health.

Vote for those writers who mention births, and weddings, and funerals, and anniversaries, and partings, and reunions.

Vote for those writers who feel the land, who love the land, who see the land, who tell the true stories of the land.

Vote for those writers who are writers.

Vote not for irony, but for heartfelt expressions of feeling.

Vote not for cleverness, but for intelligence.

Vote not for thoroughness, but for thoughtfulness.

Vote not for the obscure, but for the overlooked.

Don’t vote for a wine blog.

Vote for a storyteller.
