The conference is being held at the DoubleTree in Portland. A very, very fine establishment.

The itinerary for the conference is chock full, to say the least, but I hope to have a wee bit o’ time for some expeditioning. Particularly as I have a shortlist of expert local recommendations from an expert local, one Tim Thraves.
I met Mr. Tim at our Monte Bello Estate. We hosted he and a small group of lovely folk for a private tasting, and during conversation it came up that I would be in Portland in the near future. Mr. Tim assured me he would send me some recs. And lo and bloody behold, he did!
May I present my Thraves-derived Portland bucket list:
Here’s a sampling of places I’d recommend trying. To be clear, Portland is a much more foodie town than many people think, and frankly, you could spend days just doing the food cart thing.
Pok Pok. World renowned Thai food. If you go there, you have to try the wins. Papaya salad also is amazing.
Bunk Sandwiches. Amazingly simple but so good.
Beaker and Flask. Specializes in small tastes and great cocktails.
Oven and Shaker. Great pizza. Great cocktails. Always packed.
Aviary Another buzzworthy place that is tough to get into, but well worth it.
Departure. Great Asian inspired menu, one of the best views in the City, at the top of The Nines hotel, which I highly recommend.
If you are going real fancy/over the top.
Paley’s Place. Long time anchor of the city. French done by a Russian.
Beast. If you watch Top Chef, you’ve seen Naomi Pomeroy. Meat. Meat. Meat. 2.5 hour prix fixe. Pretty spectacular.
Le Pigeon. Might be the place I’d go for last meal. Foie Gras Profiteroles for dessert are beyond words.
D.O.C. I’m a sucker for Italian and this is the best Italian in Portland IMO.

Registration starts any minute now, and then the conference proper launches with a keynote from none other than Randall himself. A lil’ Santa Cruz Mountains in the house …
