On The Occasion Of Petrarch’s Birthday, A Petrarchan Sonnet In Honor Of Our Fellow Winery Blog Finalists

We are finalists in the 2012 Wine Blog Awards, in the Best Winery Blog category (We are also nominated for Best Overall, but that’s another post!).

Our colleagues Jordan, Kendall-Jackson, Wolf Blass, Tablas Creek, and King Estate are also finalists.

Today is Petrarch’s birthday.

So, obviously …

On The Occasion Of Petrarch’s Birthday, A Petrarchan Sonnet In Honor Of Our Fellow Winery Blog Finalists

The journey of Jordan, the truths there we seek,

and fine Kendall-Jackson — the style and the class —

all in congress with noble winemaking Wolf Blass!

And the bounty and beauty of fine Tablas Creek,

And our friends to the north, the estate of the King!

That someone somewhere should find I, in compliance,

with the prose of these five winery wine blogging giants;

Oh, splendor of language, oh, gifts that they bring!

As I sit at my desk, the screen a blank white

I ache for the words to arrive to my fingers;

a small work of genius, as the bone to the dog,

is all I can dream. Oh, the passion to write!

My colleagues, I envy you — elegant bringers

of elegant words to the worlds of the blog.

 (I should note, for those who notice such things, that the ABBA CDDC EFG EFG rhyme scheme deployed here renders this a slightly modified/non-traditional Petrachan sonnet; traditional would more likely be ABBA ABBA CDE CDE. I have introduced an additional pair of rhymes in the format above.)

Most of all, a hearty congratulations to our fellow finalists!

  1. Christopher, this is so cool! What fun and thanks for sharing.

  2. Bravo! I think for tomorrow you should aim for a Villanelle, as long as we’re at it.

    Great post; great blog. Looking forward to chatting up in Portland next month.
